Brenda is in her 30th year in education. Her background includes teaching elementary and special education in a classroom setting; itinerant teaching as a TVI and COMS, working with students from birth – 22 years; and as an educational consultant. In 2010, Linda became the Sensory Impairment Consultant at Education Service Center, Region 14 in Abilene, TX. Her role as an educational consultant is to coordinate with schools, other ESCs, Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and community members to provide support/services/trainings for students, families, and teachers This includes planning activities for our teachers/students/families to teach Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). ECC instruction is required for students with visual impairments in the state of Texas. ECC is the term used to define concepts and skills that may be deficient in students with visual impairments due to lack of opportunities to learn incidentally by observation. There are 9 areas covered under the ECC umbrella: assistive technology, career education, compensatory skills (Braille/access to print materials), independent living skills, O&M, recreation & leisure, self-determination, sensory efficiency, and social interaction skills. She works closely with Texas Workforce Solution to provide career education - training and job opportunities for our students.
Brenda is currently serving as a school board member for the Tx School for the Blind and Visually Impaired as a Person who Works with the Visually Impaired. She is serving as the Program Committee Chairperson. Brenda is also a member of TX Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (TAER) where she serves on their board as board member, president elect, and president. She is a member of the Texas Association of Parents and Educators of the Deaf (TAPED).
